Karting is a leisure activity or a sport that’s accessible to different categories of people. For example, both beginners and those for whom karting is the meaning of life can book a spot at the karting track through the AIRMAN venue. This kind of sport helps you forget the negativity for a while and get the maximum of positive emotions from driving. On top of that, drivers train their body and feel the adrenaline. But to truly enjoy the ride, you need to have some basic knowledge — including knowing what speed on a kart is acceptable and safe.
What speed does a kart go: what racers need to know
The maximum speed and acceleration of a kart depend solely on its class, engine type and purpose. Today, mini-cars are divided into two types: amateur (rental) and sports (professional).

Rental karting: what speed does karting for amateurs reach
Rental karts are single-seat machines built for mass driving. They’re usually fitted with engines of 160–270 cc and a power output of 5 to 13 horsepower.
The average karting speed will depend on the type of track and engine:
- An indoor (enclosed) track. Because of the large number of sharp corners and a short starting straight, the average speed is 45–60 km/h.
- An open, long track. Here the machine can unleash its potential, and the maximum karting speed reaches 70–80 km/h.
Since amateur karts have a maximum-speed limiter, they aren’t able to reach a speed of 100 km/h or more.
Note! There is also a separate children’s karting. For the safety of little racers, the engine capacity there is smaller and the karting speed is strictly limited to 20–40 km/h.
Power in horsepower: karting speed of 9 hp and 15 hp
When choosing your “car”, the rental will definitely offer you machines of different power. Here’s how horsepower affects how fast a kart accelerates:
- Karting speed of 9 hp. This is the option for those just starting out. The maximum speed of a 9 hp kart on a straight track is around 60–65 km/h. Such a kart forgives piloting mistakes and is ideal for learning the racing lines.
- Karting speed of 15 hp. This is already machinery for experienced drivers. Thanks to the greater power, the acceleration dynamics here are much more aggressive, and a kart with such an engine can reach up to 80 km/h on open tracks.
Sports karts – the fastest in the world
As for professional karts, these are constructions designed for high-level sport. The maximum karting speed depends on the class of the vehicle:
- Classes without a gearbox. These single-speed karts reach a speed of 110–130 km/h in 4–4.5 seconds. For example: Rotax MAX. The power depends on the model — 8–30 hp.
- Classes with a gearbox. For example, these could be KZ or KZ2. They use a 6-speed sequential gearbox and are capable of accelerating to 150–160 km/h. Such karts are fitted with a 125 cc engine. If you’re wondering how much horsepower a kart of this type has, that figure is around 42 to 52. To accelerate to 100 km/h they need 2.5–3 seconds.
- Superkarts. These are karts with aerodynamic fairings that you can see on major car circuits. You could say this is the fastest karting, because such mini-cars are capable of reaching a cosmic 230–260 km/h. The engine capacity is strictly limited to the 250 cc mark. The maximum power varies within 95–105 hp.

Why 60 km/h in karts feels like 150 in cars
You already know what speed on a kart is possible, but sometimes those 60 km/h feel like 150. So what’s the reason? This feeling arises because of the features of the mini-cars themselves. First, the driver sits very low — just a few centimetres from the asphalt. This is the main reason why the sense of speed for the driver increases twofold or more.
Second, karts have no shock absorbers. The frame acts as the suspension, so the driver’s body clearly feels any unevenness of the track.
Third, karts have one peculiarity — direct steering. The slightest turn of the hands instantly changes the direction of travel, which demands lightning-fast reactions and physical strength.
And, of course, we should mention the grip on the asphalt. The rubber used on sports models has no tread, so it “sticks” to the asphalt, allowing you to take corners at a speed at which an ordinary car would long ago have flown off into the ditch.
For some people, karting is simply a good time with friends or colleagues that delivers a powerful hit of adrenaline and helps them reset after the working week. For others, it’s motorsport — a fierce fight for hundredths of a second and a test of one’s own endurance, and understanding exactly what speed a kart reaches often helps to achieve certain goals.

Why does a kart pick up speed better than passenger cars despite its modest power?
The answer lies in the small mass of the mini-car. Together with the driver it weighs 150–160 kg. Besides, karts don’t have a heavy gearbox or a safety system.
I know rental karts have rev limiters. What are they for?
First of all, it’s the driver’s safety. Thanks to such limiters, the speed can be reduced to the required level so that inexperienced drivers can’t accelerate to dangerous values.
Can a kart tip over on the track?
On a flat track the chances of tipping over are minimal. But (!) you can fly off the track or collide with the barriers.
Does the driver's weight affect the kart's speed?
Yes. Sometimes the driver weighs more than the kart. A lighter driver, under the same conditions, will have better acceleration and a higher top speed.
Do you need special gear?
The maximum speed in karting is 260 km/h. Using professional gear is a must. A racer will need a special suit, a helmet, rib protection and footwear.
